Like many people, when the Covid-19 pandemic hit, Siddarth \u2018Sid\u2019 Singhal used it to explore new options.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

After qualifying as a mechanical engineer and then working in data analytics, Sid decided not only to move countries but also to take the plunge and transition into a new career.<\/span><\/p>\n

We were keen to hear about Sid\u2019s journey into cyber security and how the <\/span>Institute of Data Cyber Security programme<\/span><\/a> helped him prepare for his current role at the Australian Military Bank.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

1. Tell us about yourself, Sid.<\/b>
\n<\/b><\/h2>\n

I’m from Mumbai and moved to Sydney in March 2022. I have a thing for motorbikes and speed and usually spend my weekends catching the sunrise or going for treks.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

After finishing my engineering degree, I worked as a business analyst. After the pandemic, I considered a career change.<\/span><\/p>\n

There was a high demand for cyber security professionals in Australia<\/a>. Since I was already a tech guy and interested in the field, it was a natural progression for me.<\/span><\/p>\n

2. How did your interest in tech begin?\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n

Growing up, I spent a lot of time playing video games. I believe that this kind of activity naturally leads people to develop logical thinking and an interest in technology.<\/span><\/p>\n

I always knew I would pursue a career in tech or engineering. In India, it’s common for people to become engineers, and both my father and grandfather were engineers, so it seemed like a natural choice for me.<\/span><\/p>\n

Even now, I’m constantly working on <\/span>improving my skills in AI<\/span><\/a> and other screen-based technologies.<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

3. How did you learn about the Institute of Data\u2019s Cyber Security programme?\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n

When I first decided to move to Australia, I initially considered doing a master\u2019s degree. But it was expensive and time-consuming.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

There is a real need for professionals in the cyber security field, so I saw an opportunity and decided to go for it. Also, I\u2019d fallen victim to a scam, so I was inspired to help stop that from happening to others. <\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>After a few Google searches, I found the Institute of Data\u2019s <\/span>Cyber Security programme<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

4. Why did you choose the Institute of Data\u2019s programme specifically?\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n[su_quote]Because I had some work experience and a background in tech, I decided a short programme in cyber security would be enough for me to transition into the field. [\/su_quote]\n

I think if I were a completely non-technical person, I would have gone for a master’s, but since I had a general understanding of the subjects covered, it seemed like the best option.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What appealed to me about the <\/span>Institute of Data Cyber Security programme<\/span><\/a> was that there are fewer students in each cohort, so it\u2019s more personalised.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n[su_quote]I also liked that it was completely online and flexible enough for me to return home (to India) if I needed to for some reason.\u00a0[\/su_quote]\n

From the money side of things, it worked well for me because I was awarded a scholarship, and the fees were structured so I could pay monthly. So altogether, it was the best option.<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

5. And how did you find the programme overall?\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n

It was an amazing programme. One of the highlights of the programme was my trainer, Wolf. He taught us every day.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n[su_quote]Because of the small number of students in the class, we received lots of one-on-one attention.[\/su_quote]\n

Our trainer was highly specialised and advanced and had worked for Australia\u2019s Cyber Defence<\/a>. <\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>He\u2019s considered one of the top cyber professionals in Australia. <\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>The way he explained things and tailored the programme content to all of our questions was fantastic.<\/span><\/p>\n[su_quote]I could easily listen to him for the whole day.[\/su_quote]\n

My connection with Wolf was one of the main benefits of the programme. The help he subsequently gave me was invaluable, like a recommendation when I was applying for roles.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The core structure was good, but the trainer made the most significant difference for me personally.<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

6. The Institute of Data offers many additional resources to students. Did you find any of them helpful?<\/b>
\n<\/b><\/h2>\n

The job outcomes programme really helped me. They assisted me with my resume, which turned out well, and they were always there, giving me constant support. Many people need that kind of mentorship.<\/span><\/p>\n

The slides and the study resources weren\u2019t too complicated, which was useful, especially for those with less tech-based background.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The biggest advantage for me, though, was the real-world insight of our tutor and trainer. <\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>Because they were both working professionals, they gave us a unique understanding of what it’s actually like to work in the cyber security industry.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

7. I understand you\u2019ve successfully landed a role in the cyber security industry. Congratulations! Can you tell us about it?<\/b><\/h2>\n

I’m now working at the Australian Military Bank. <\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>[su_quote]I was excited to work for them because I felt I could be of service. [\/su_quote]<\/span>My father worked in the Navy, which instilled in me the value of serving and helping people.<\/span><\/p>\n

I’m currently working as a Cyber and Data Governance Analyst.<\/span><\/p>\n

The job involves – writing policies, providing cyber awareness training to staff, monthly cyber reports to the board and ad-hoc governance stuff.<\/p>\n

My manager has been very helpful with his guidance and mentorship, which has been a big bonus for me. It is very interesting as there are new things to do every day!<\/span><\/p>\n

8. What guidance would you give to someone applying for jobs after graduating?<\/b><\/h2>\n

In Sydney, as in many cities, there are a lot of cyber security conferences, events and webinars that happen.<\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>They\u2019re free and a great way of making connections and finding out about roles and industry developments.<\/span><\/p>\n[su_quote]I think networking and making connections is really important.\u00a0[\/su_quote]\n

When you\u2019re a student, making the most of the knowledge the instructors can pass on is vital.<\/span><\/p>\n

They\u2019ll give you invaluable information on what skills certain jobs require and how to put your best foot forward.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

9. Who do you believe the Institute of Data\u2019s Cyber Security programme is suitable for?<\/b><\/h2>\n[su_quote]I think anyone can do it! It is the perfect transitioning programme, but also, if you’re coming from a technical background, it’s easier. [\/su_quote]\n

If you’re not technical or from a non-technical background, you’ll have to put in more effort. But it’s just a matter of effort in that sense.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

If you want to transition into cyber security, this would be the programme I\u2019d recommend, as it gives you the skills the recruiters and companies are looking for.<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

10. What do you love the most about working in the cyber security industry?<\/b><\/h2>\n

What I love most is the uncertainty, especially in my field of cyber security. For example, the <\/span>developments in AI<\/span><\/a> and Quantum and how they affect cyber security are exciting!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What is the next big thing, and what is coming to the rescue? We all joke about how we are heading towards doom, but yeah, that’s the fun part – the uncertainty.<\/span><\/p>\n

11. What advice would you give someone interested in joining the cyber security industry?<\/b><\/h2>\n

Decide if you want to focus on technical or non-technical roles. Be prepared for the interview, and determine the most in-demand skills<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For example, I was in data analytics, and then I moved to cyber security because, in my opinion, it is a developing industry with the most opportunities.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
